So after a month of getting jerked around by corporate inefficiency, the reset is complete and I am transitioning back to days! I got home this morning at 7am from my final night shift, napped till 10 to take the edge of exhaustion off, and then was up again. I spent at least five hours lying in bed with the cats and a book while sunlight oh the sunlight streamed across the bed. I napped from 5-8 (seriously, I cannot seem to get enough sleep right now), then came back downstairs to spend time with Ben. He made a wonderful dinner, and I will probably be able to go back to bed around 1 or 2, which is pretty good in terms of adjusting my schedule gently. I’ll set an alarm for early tomorrow morning, to try to help with the adjusting, since I’m due in at work at 7am on Sunday.

I’ve been starting to look over my schedule for the next few weeks, and it’s really rather crazy. After a month of not getting to see anyone, I’m sort of desperate to find time to make the rounds. But I have a limited number of evenings, which puts a crimp in that. Ben and I are working on it now, but I think it’s going to be quite the shuffle to work on catching up with everyone!

Nimitz is informing me it’s time to curl up with blankets and watch tv, and who am I to argue with the cuddly half of the kitten? I’m hoping with the return to days (and, oh yeah, the AWESOMEST GIFT EVER from Ben of a keyboard for my tablet), I’ll be able to blog more. Which is sort of what I always promise, isn’t it?

As anyone who has known me for years can attest, I am a night owl. Staying up late is nothing new for me, and being given a chance to work late instead of early? I will absolutely jump at it! So when my manager asked if I’d like to work nights for the store reset, I checked with Ben, and then said yes. For the past week and a half, I go off to work at 9:30pm, have lunch at 2, and come home as the dawn rises at 8am. Sleep from 8 to 4, then a few hours of social time and it’s back to work.

Can I just tell you how tired I am? And how much I miss daylight? Family? A glass of wine with dinner?

Apparently, corporate structure being what it is, once our previously-approved overtime went through the system, someone higher up flipped at the numbers and our hours got slashed. While I’m bummed about less pay, at least I’ll get more time to be around people now. I got an unexpected day off this week, plus now we’re only working 10pm to 6am, which means I’ll be up and about by 2pm!

Of course, I also happened to catch a cold — last week, I got to hang out with Kristen and the girls, and little Kora was fighting a cold. She’s in a super-snuggly phase, so whenever I sneeze, I think of her little hugs, which makes this probably the cutest little cold I’ve ever had. Downside is that it makes me want to sleep a lot, which means going to bed just before dawn and waking up after the sun has set.

I really miss daylight.

I’ve been having one of those months where there’s just so many thoughts to think, so much stuff to say, and yet none of it coalesces in a way that I can write about it, which is sort of a shame since a lot of it is stuff I want to share. I’ve been working full-time for two months now, and I still feel like I’m struggling to get my feet under me. I’m learning the work-life balance all over again, and it’s hard. Ben has done amazing at taking point around the house, making sure I have food to take with me or planning out what we’ll do about dinner. I often feel like I’m neglecting my half of the household chores, but he never complains, which is quite humbling. But working 45 hours a week at a very physically and mentally taxing job takes its toll. Don’t get me wrong, I love the work. I get to talk to so many different people, most of them quite nice. They invite me in for a tiny little peek into their lives and ask me to make their dinner plans better. I’ve learned how to read what sort of flavors a person likes within a thirty second conversation. I’ve learned the most common mispronunciations (gewurztraminer I expected. Sutter Home? That one surprised me). I am assembling a fairly hilarious list of things people have asked me, because when you see two to three hundred people every day, someone is bound to say something ridiculous pretty much daily. I’m debating whether it’s okay to post such things here, because I don’t want any of it to come back to haunt me, but they’re the sort of comments that tend to make me smile.

Whoops, there we go again. A short day at work today, but I still have to get ready and get there on time…

The dinner table for Rosh Hashanah this year, at our house.

There’s been a lot that’s happened lately, and as usual, that means I’m not very good at keeping things up to date here. We had my Mom and grandparents over for dinner for Rosh Hashanah (picture of the lovely table Ben set at left). It was really nice to be able to have a nice family meal on the good dishes (which we had never before used!), with great company, conversation, and food. Standard delicious brisket, with carrots, apples, and kugel. Wine pairing: Dom Mousset Côtes-du-Rhone, which was fruity and bold and spicy and delicious.

The week before High Holidays, I just started a new job. This week, I hit one month of employment with them. I’m a wine associate at a local wine shop, and since starting, I’m getting close to 200 wines tasted. So look forward to more frequent mentions of wines around here.

The new job is full time, so I’ve had a lot less time sitting around at home. Ben, on the other hand, has been experiencing a slow down in the number of gigs he gets, which at least has freed him up to work on writing more. He just finished the first draft of Part 2 of the novel, so expect to hear more from him on that. Also, I will be prodding him to update here as I find less free time.

Nimitz has her first introduction to Very Large Vegetables, in this case, the Mighty Cauliflower.

I had Tuesday and Wednesday as my weekend this week. Ben had gigs on Tuesday, so I spent the day playing Minecraft. Wednesday, we decided we wanted to do something awesome, like visit a winery or a museum, but decided there weren’t any museums we were interested in this week, and we deal with a lot of wine at the moment. So instead, we went to Larriland Farm, to go visit a U-Pick pumpkin patch. On a rainy, rainy day. Oops.

They still had a bunch of already picked stuff at their Red Barn, so we got a crookneck squash for pie (like last year), a humongous cauliflower for $4 (see left), a bunch of decorative gourds, some chard, some apple cider, and some apples.

We saw some awesome looking gourds and squash. Ben made friends with the local calico, who proceeded to follow him around. It always amazes me how we can end up having so much fun with something as simple as shopping for veggies.

Bananas?

I’ve got work again this afternoon. Saturdays are fun, because I get to talk to a lot of different people. I like that I get to help them have a pleasant evening, to find something that will enhance their meals, or help them unwind after work, or impress their guests. I help demystify the World of Wine, and I show them that it doesn’t have to be all about snobbery; that it’s mainly about what tastes good, and what you find pleasurable to drink. I encourage them to stretch their palates, to learn wine-speak, and to try new things. And most of the wine I sell is stuff I’ve tried and just been excited about. “This was really awesome. We had it last night, and I’m really digging it.” Currently, my favorite grape is the Torrontes, and we’re working our way through trying all the ones my store sells. I’m debating whether or not it’s worthwhile to put mini-reviews of the wines we taste up here, or just stick to mentioning it occasionally. Any thoughts?

8 am. My phone rings. My alarm is set for 9, and everybody knows there’s no use calling me before 10. It’s not my usual ringtone. Ben.

“I’ve been in a car accident. I’m okay. The other driver is okay. The airbags went off. We were merging onto 395 when it happened, so we pulled over onto a side street. She had just dropped her daughter off at daycare, so she was the only one in her car.”

Two weeks ago, he took the Civic in for a oil change, and the hood wouldn’t open. We took it over to the dealership, figuring if anyone could get the hood open, they’d know how. $700 later, it was open and the oil was changed, but they also found a whole list of things wrong with the car, starting with a check engine light for the catalytic converter to a missing engine mount. Total estimate: $3740. Current blue book of the car: less than $2200. So we’d been car shopping over the weekend, which was exhausting and exciting. After test driving a Versa, a Yaris, a Mazda2, and of course, my Fit, Ben fell in love with the Mazda2. I would call it the only serious competitor to the Fit, and its handling fits Ben’s driving style better than mine. We were on the hunt for a green one, which are nearly impossible to find. The dealership told us there are currently none on the east coast anywhere, and they’d just brought a blue one down from New York for a woman, so they really were checking a large area. We asked about getting a blue one instead, and it sounded like that would be possible. We were supposed to sign papers on Tuesday night. In the meantime, we’re down to one car, so Ben was driving the Fit back and forth to work. Which is what put him on 395 at 8 am.

There was a police officer there, who he needed to go speak with. I sent him a photo of my AAA card, since I had a plus membership and his was only a regular, so we could get it towed back up to Laurel somewhere. We got off the phone so he could start dealing with things. I paced the living room for a few minutes. I had to talk with someone, and the cats are terrible at listening. 8:15am. Dad would be awake, so I called.

Dad was just about to leave for work; I’d caught him just in time. He suggested he drive down to my house and I could drive him to work, so I’d have use of his car for the day. He’d be here in twenty minutes. I fed a pair of very confused cats, got dressed, and tried to sit down in the living room. I switched chairs. Still couldn’t sit still. Switched again. Ben called back. He was having problems with AAA: I needed to be present to use my car. Okay, use yours and have them tow it somewhere close. I’ll drive down and get it towed up here. He calls back; his membership expired at the end of July. Okay, we’ll add you to my plan today and see what happens. Dad arrived and I caught him up on the latest details. We got Ben added to the plan. Plus membership doesn’t take effect for 10 days. Okay, fine. Back to Plan B.

I am clearly a mess. Dad calls the office and tells them he’s going to stick around until I get this all settled. I call the insurance company and get that ball rolling. Liberty Mutual is great. They are a wonder to work with. We get the details squared away to get the car towed to a shop up here. They’ll even cover the towing. I have rental insurance, too, so we arrange for a rental car, pickup around noon. Ben is still waiting with the car for the tow truck to arrive. His plan is to head in to work as soon as the truck gets the car, and I’ll pick him up at 3, the end of the day.

Noon. Dad and I head over to the rental facility, which is inside the VW dealership. I’m supposed to be getting a call from the Mazda dealership about the status of our blue 2. I tell Dad I don’t even know what to say to them at this point. “You buy the car. You still need it.” Oh. Right. That was obvious. We get the paperwork sorted for the rental and are told it will be a little while before the car will arrive from their other facility, so Dad and I went to look at the showroom. When a salesman walks over, I tell him the cars are lovely, but I can guarantee he doesn’t have anything in our price range (I did my homework, you see). He assures me that I’m wrong, and they certainly do. I tell him our price range. He suggests a pared down Jetta. I tell him we need a hatchback. “Oh. Yeah, we don’t have anything for you.”

1:00 pm. Our rental car arrives, and it’s a Chevy HHR. I think that stands for Huge Hulking Roadobject. It has the tiniest windshield I’ve ever seen. I feel like this is some sort of assault vehicle, trying to minimize the vulnerable glass areas to protect against attacks. It’s half again as long as my car and ugly as sin. When I take a left out of the parking lot, I whacked my elbow on the door. Oh yeah, we’ll do well together, this car and me. Dad heads off to work, and I head home to grab some lunch before I need to run down to Arlington to pick up Ben at work. I call my grandparents while fixing some food, then call Mom. I sort of picked at my food; my stomach was feeling off. 1:50. I need to be out the door at 2 to get there in time, and I’m running behind. I’ll get directions upstairs, go see Ben, and finally this damned day will have a breath of normalcy. I will be able to relax, to finally breathe. Still on the phone with Mom, I ran upstairs to load up a map. I turn on the computer and sit down. Nimitz comes dashing into the room like her tail is on fire (Nimitz is 10 months old. This is considered normal behavior), then runs behind the guest bed, which she only does when she’s terrified. I hear a rumbling outside, like a big truck idling. Perfectly normal sounds, with our thin walls. Then I feel a vibration in the floor. That part is not normal. I stood up and looked around. The vibration gets stronger, shaking.

“Mom, my house is shaking.”

This can’t be an earthquake. We’re in Maryland. We don’t have earthquakes here. I’m having a rough day and losing my mind. There’s a perfectly logical explanation. Mom will know what this actually is.

“Mine too.”

No, that can’t be right. The shaking is getting worse. Somewhere in all this, I’ve moved and am standing in the doorway, although I don’t remember moving. Everything in the house is rattling. It’s so loud. The ceiling fans are all shaking, the railing to the stairs. It’s getting worse, and I don’t know when it will stop. Should I be downstairs in a doorway there? We don’t have earthquakes. I don’t know what you’re supposed to do! Lilit is in the hallway, standing in the bedroom door. Brilliant kitty, even she knows you’re supposed to be in a doorway! I think. Is that even right? This is not on my list of natural disasters to prepare for! Fifteen seconds, twenty seconds, an eternity later it all stops.

I think it stopped. “I’m shaking so hard I can’t tell. Is it still shaking, or is it just me?”

“It’s just you,” Mom says, “It’s stopped here.”

I have to go get Ben. The neighbors are all outside, and I have this irrepressible need to be face to face with people. I talk with the neighbors. I get my things together, including my phone charger, since now my poor battery is dead. I’ve been on the phone all day, it seems. The drive down to Arlington is long, but thankfully uneventful. The radio is full of confusion, and phone calls getting through are sporadic. A lot of texts fail, but most get through. At stop lights, I send off quick replies.

Ben and I look at the traffic maps and decide since it’s going to take us four hours to get home anyways, we ought to call Amanda and see if she wants to grab dinner. She suggests a fabulous Chinese restaurant, where we have a lovely meal despite flickering power problems. Ben and I get home around 7:45. The phone lines are clear enough we can check in with everyone we haven’t already checked in with. We talk until there are no more words to be said, and then we just sit in silence together. A day like this makes everything so clear, what’s important, what isn’t. I finally crawl into bed, Ben on one side of me, Lilit pressed against the other, and I close my eyes.

We had a historically huge earthquake hit our region today, and that was the small event for me.

Well, perhaps “helped” is too strong of a word. She certainly participated, though.

Ben and I went up to New York for the weekend to visit with some of my family for a cousin’s bar mitzvah (and I managed to fail at taking a single picture the entire weekend). We rented an SUV, and I drove up on Friday with my mom and grandparents. Ben still had rehearsal, so he met us up there by train. The bar mitzvah itself was great: Adam did wonderfully, no surprise there, and Pearl and Owen had put together a wonderful party surrounding it. Ben got his first visit to a very Conservative synagogue; his previous experience with me was with our extremely liberal Reconstructionist synagogue.

We had one really fascinating outcome from being away this weekend. All the people we usually ask to feed the cats were out of town as well this weekend (seriously, everyone. It was crazy!). Ben put out lots of water and dry food and we sort of hoped for the best. Well, it seems Nimitz was convinced she’d been abandoned completely, and Lilit got so tired of growling at Nimitz she’s nearly given up. Nimitz now wakes me up 3-4 times a night so she can curl up on my chest and purr at me. During the day, she can go about two hours, and then she needs to find me and sit in my lap and purr for a while. If I’m at the computer, that can quickly evolve into sitting on the mouse with a paw on the keyboard (thus the row of 4s that began as this post’s title). Lilit is, as in most things, much more reasonable about her reaction. She has settled back in, although she now only growls at Nimitz when it’s clear the kitten is intending to jump on her. I really don’t blame her for that one.

We had food debacles again this weekend. The bar mitzvah itself was kosher non-dairy, which was wonderful since it meant I got a piece of chocolate lava cake for dessert (which, seriously? Damn. I must find a recipe. And Kayla, if you’re reading this, I will totally share when I find it.). The hotel restaurant, on the other hand, was amazingly bad in how it dealt with me. My favorite was the breakfast where I told the chef I would like an omelet with ham and onion, no cheese, no butter, no milk, I have a dairy allergy. He put cheese in it, and when I complained to the manager (because seriously, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen), the manager informed me it was a “miscommunication”, like it was my fault for not being clear enough. And they then charged us the full buffet rate for my stale bagel and cup of coffee that tasted like sawdust. Ben and I went to Dunkin Donuts the next day. (The hotel also had a bunch of other screw-ups in regards to our rooms and the billing, so much so that when it was time to check out, I took my bill and Mom’s, both of which were very wrong, and complained enough we both got the AARP discount that they had denied Mom and Ben and I were never eligible for. Did I mention the part where they tried checking Mom out a day early?)

We’ve done a lot of travel lately. I’m pretty excited to be staying home for a while. I love seeing new places, but the last month has been pretty rough on my stomach. Ben’s got summer camp every day this week and next and we’ve got rehearsals in the evenings, so it’s up to me big time to get our food consumption back on track. I’ve got a big to do list over the next two weeks, and I’m really hoping to knock out as much of it as I can. I have some pretty lofty goals, like getting the back yard into serious shape before the fall, and getting my wardrobe under control. Once the weather cools off and the office is no longer 150° at mid-day, I’ll tackle that, too. Watch out! If I’m not careful, this place will turn into an actual house while nobody’s looking!

Seriously, don't pick cables as a way to start.

I’ve got a couple ideas percolating, including one that would start off as a crafty blog and potential morph into a how to book (if I can get the follow-through to actually do it). Ben pointed out that I have a rather unusual way of tackling new craft disciplines, in that I pick an entirely too complicated project, stress myself silly finishing it, and then come out of it with a decent understanding of the medium. My first crochet project? A twin-sized afghan made with three strands held together. My first knitting project? I picked a pattern for arm warmers that involved cables, double pointed needles, waste yarn, and adding a thumb back in later. Those of you who knit understand what that all means. I didn’t until I finished the first pair. And then I decided I didn’t like the pattern the way it was and adapted it for attempt #2. Because I’m crazy like that.

I plan to learn how to sew next, and I will probably attack it in much the same way. I’ve picked a bunch of patterns I like. I’ll probably pick the hardest one to start with, because that’s how I roll, you see.

So I think it would be interesting to blog my crafting journeys. It seems the hardest part of that is picking a new name for the new blog. I’ve got some ideas, but I’m not sure if I like any of them enough to commit yet. In the process of brainstorming, Ben found one he liked for himself, but as he never updates here, adding another blog for him to ignore is probably not a good idea.

I was going to write about last night’s dinner – we got andouille in the last pork package from the farmer, and of course we had to make jambalaya. It turned out really well, and we will probably do it again. But I have no photos for you because we ate it all. Blogging is hard, and remembering to take photos of everythingnis even harder. Sorry about that.

So I had the great beginnings of a final post, to make my vacation series into a three-part thing, but then it got eaten. I don’t know if Topaz ate it or if WordPress ate it, but somebody certainly ate it because I definitely wrote it and now I can’t find it anywhere. Oy.

Suffice it to say there was more beach time, some mini golf, and then another long-ass drive to get home. We were very excited to arrive back, although not nearly as excited as the cats. Nimitz promptly punched me in the eye with her fuzzy little paw (no damage done), and Lilith has started making the most distressing noises when she wants attention. Ah, home.

This week has felt like an odd combination of rushing around like a crazy person and sitting around with nothing to do. On Tuesday, I had the longest job interview of my life (I think it went well, but it’s so hard to tell with these things). Wednesday and Thursday, we had rehearsal for InterAct (always full of hilarity, usually full of art and productivity as well). Wednesday night I got to hang out with Kristen, and Thursday night, we had dinner with Mom and my grandparents. And then Friday, back to sitting around doing not a whole lot. Brainstorming art, working on projects, failing at cleaning up the house… I’m still struggling to find myself lately. I feel closer to an answer than I have in a long time, but not an immediate answer. Like I’m on the path to understanding what I’m doing with my life, but I don’t quite have all the information yet.

We’re going to hit the farmer’s market today. It’s taken us most of this week to get back on track meal-wise. Food is such a complicated subject.

Oh, by the way, I’ve updated the Michigan posts with photos. Enjoy!

Anyone know why Holland has a big bronze statue of Franklin?

I’m told thunderstorms out here on the lake are a Thing, that we’re supposed to drop everything and go watch as they roll in across the lake, lighting striking, thunder shaking the house. When tonight’s storm began, I asked if we were under cannon fire, and if there was artillery we ought to prepare in response. The house shook, the sky lit up like daylight, and all activity ground to a halt so we could stand on the porch and watch the rain pour down.

Since when do I just stand and watch?

Ben and I went running headfirst into the rain, racing across the beach, falling in the sand and getting back up again, until I realized we were so far from cover I was certain we’d get hit by lightning. Granted, we were both two glasses of sangria into the evening, but still, I don’t mess around when it comes to electricity. So we returned to the sidewalk, nearer the house and just standing there, experiencing the rain. Open your mouth and drink it in: the sky is falling and the moment is here. No thoughts, just feel. Perfect temperature for it – not too cold. Because if you’re going to watch the storm, shouldn’t you breathe it too?

It’s been a relaxing couple of days. Yesterday, we stopped in at some winery tasting rooms in downtown Saugatuck, where we walked out with three bottles from two wineries. Finally, we found a decent beach hat for me (it’s been a hell of a search), then headed back to the cottage to wait for Chappell and Rosalind to arrive. Ben and I tried to take the canoe out on the lake, but the water was so choppy, we spent most of the time fighting the waves. We got to see the stars, including a shooting star, and we had a night so cloudless you could see the Milky Way.

Today began with heavy rains and a damp trip to the Farmer’s Market in Holland. Their peach season is a month behind ours, so I’m back to first week peaches, but at least there are peaches. Which went into tonight’s sangria, along with a past-its-prime bottle of white from Deep Creek (which has happened twice to us, so I think no more wine from them), and the cheapest bottle of local cherry wine. Three of us drinking and we kicked the pitcher. No joke.

Before dinner, Ben and I headed back to Saugatuck for a theoretically outdoor concert of Zydeco music. It turned out to be moved inside due to rain, and was fabulous, especially when the entire dance floor was taken hostage by three to five year old girls. Adorable. We wandered a bit, getting a feel for the town, then headed back for dinner, since this small town apparently has one menu for all thirty restaurants, and than menu includes a lot of dairy. So instead we made fried rice, which was wonderful. And then the aforementioned sangria, which meant the rice didn’t need to be half so good. Especially since we couldn’t fine wine glasses and drank our sangria in ice cream bowls. Which held a lot of sangria. Which might explain the run through the rain (but I still stand by the decision).

Life is not a dress rehearsal, and clothing launders just fine. Sometimes what a day needs is a splashy wake up call.
